I was pondering that today, that California may have received a large amount of saline in the vax. This was another way to divide the country; Middle America experiences way more side effects and has one perception. The coasts do not experience as many side effects, and have a totally different perception.

Up here in Northern California (Sonoma county) about a third of the people in the grocery store are masked. There was an article in our local paper about flu outbreak now in the middle of spring, something doctors have never seen before and are puzzled by.

Covid isn't totally dead in LA. I have a friend who got one shot for a production gig but started feeling a little dizzy after his regular exercise...so he didn't get another shot. Now he's thinking of trying to get more "industry" jobs (entertainment) and he's already been turned down from a few small jobs because he hasn't been fully jabbed. It's required by SAG/AFTRA. So the covid insanity is far from over there, it's just buried under the surface.

The Ent. business is going to have a massively hard time dealing with reality.

They really fucked over a bunch of people, and once a few near the top (it's 100% herd town) start to flip, the unions are going to be right fucked.

Far too many masks here in Dunedin, central city especially.

My travels in last 3 weeks to Australia;

* Sunshine Coast, Queensland - really low mask compliance a % or two at most.

* Melbourne, Victoria - a little higher but no masks required for retail or cafes/restaurants so most are not complying. Maybe 7/8% or so in the streets of the CBD.

* Christchurch, NZ. In places like libraries and upper middle class bookshops the gaslighters are out in force. They lunge at you "wear your mask". They seem to love doing it. But outside of these environments compliance is low.

* Dunedin (home and a University city) - mad. 30/40% compliance on the streets in the CBD. I've taken to insulting them.

San Diego has several universities and on campus the kids are auto-masking outdoors like crazy. But even in super-liberal Hillcrest and University Heights there’s little masking.

Also hourly employees are still masking a lot, which makes sense since their jobs filtered for being able to mask all day to begin with.

I heckled maskers when they were the majority. Now the ones that are left deserve actual hostility from normies. If I had money I’d put up a giant billboard that said “The ones who are still masking are the reasons your kids had to mask.”

Right - even last year w/ “hot v*** summer” and the honor system mandate revocation (which I totally flaunted) it was still very much taboo to unmask indoors.

And as I said DTLA and also the sunset strip to an extent are still holdouts. But the valley is totally alive

RE Floyd, there was a creepily erotic book excerpt in WaPo and a weirdly timed medpage today splainer about police and fentanyl, but otherwise seems like a nonevent this year. Ho hum a citizen is in prison for knee touching, we don’t remember the details anyway moving on
